Supervisor - Mammal Department

Effective immediately, a Supervisor position is available in the Mammal Department. The Mammal Department Supervisor is responsible for training, supervising, observing, and evaluating subordinates. The Mammal Department Supervisor performs a wide variety of supervisory tasks related to ensuring subordinates provide proper handling, care, and maintenance of animals, exhibit areas, buildings, enclosures, shelters, and service areas. The Mammal Department Supervisor is responsible for assuring proper medical treatments of zoo animals in accordance with instructions of the Zoo Veterinarian and daily cleaning and maintenance of animal enclosures and service areas. The Mammal Department Supervisor reports to the department curator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
  • Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in visitor comfort and service.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist visitors with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. 
    Address the visitor - do not wait to be asked.
  • Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
  • Observe and evaluate animal behavior and condition and report such to the department curator.
  • Assure the daily cleaning, feeding and care of zoo animals.
  • Assist in the design and construction of exhibits.
  • Maintain department records; including animal records, employee records, daily reports, work orders and purchase requests.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and orally with the public, subordinates, fellow supervisors, curators, and health care staff and volunteers.
  • Safely work around delicate, wild and occasionally dangerous animals, and demonstrate safe work habits to subordinates.
  • Supervise the department animal behavior enrichment and training program.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and occasional after-hour assignments.
  • Bachelor's degree in wildlife management, zoology, biology, or related field.
  • Valid Texas driver's license.
  • Five years experience with exotic animal care, behavior and husbandry in a zoo or similar environment.
  • Three years supervisory experience
